Building Committee – June 4 | Meeting Video
- Traffic Review
- Prior to the meeting, traffic engineer Rebecca Brown reviewed alternative traffic plans proposed by community members. She presented the additional alternative plans to the committee and reviewed the benefits and challenges for each.
- The district met with the city’s Traffic Operations Committee in May and reviewed the proposed plan and discussed alternatives. The committee agreed the proposed plan is the safest alternative.
- No changes were made to the plan.
- Harvey Construction and HMFH Architects presented construction cost estimates based on 60% completed construction documents.
- The next Building Committee has not been scheduled.
Special Board Meeting – June 8 | Meeting Video
Note: Middle school project-related items only
- Traffic
- Members of the public shared their concerns with the proposed plan for bus and staff traffic to access the middle school via Noyes and Cypress Street.
- The proposed traffic plan and alternatives from community members have been reviewed by multiple traffic engineers – paid and volunteer. The alternative plans are not feasible when accounting for current code requirements. There is consensus among traffic engineers the proposed plan is the safest option.
- Construction Update
- Mobilization is continuing this week. A six-foot fence is erected around the perimeter for safety. All week, the first few layers of soil have been removed while site fill brought in over the next three weeks.
- Value Engineering Recommendations
- The original approved construction budget of $141,331,360 has been reduced to $134,330,615 through design development, the early bid package savings, and the 60% construction documents phase. Harvey Construction and HMFH presented a value engineering list that identified accepted reductions totaling $1,361,794, with additional gold-highlighted items still pending pricing and committee sign-off. Key accepted savings include simplified courtyard exterior design, asphalt sidewalks in applicable areas and hydro seeding of the lawns. The metal roof with radiant snow melt was retained as the better long-term investment given solar panel compatibility. The board unanimously approved the $1,361,794 in value engineering reductions. Remaining gold items will be brought back with pricing before the GMP bid goes out after July 4.
- LEED Certification
- The Board discussed LEED certification and the value to the project. The Sustainability Working Group and Building Committee recommended LEED certification. A motion to remove LEED certification from the project failed.
