It is a privilege to recognize Ms. Karen Braz as a Concord Champion for Children. I have learned the profound and positive impact Karen has in our capital city. Karen is a founder of the Children’s Theater Project, her first production, The Wind in The Willows was performed in 1996. Karen continues to direct the project and has also directed a fall and spring PEG performance at Rundlett Middle School for over a decade.
Working with adolescents is both fun and challenging. As we know, this challenge is not for everyone. To teach and direct “middle schoolers” to a common purpose as a cast team is a remarkable endeavor. It also requires an exclusive talent, soul and demeanor. Further, I can tell you as a middle school principal, what Karen does for adolescents is admirable and unique. Karen’s passion for exposing the “most challenging” age group to the performing arts is special.
I have a private chuckle when Ms. Braz announces “auditions” for one of her PEG performances. I know Karen finds a role for everyone who shows up for the “auditions.” If a student is willing to commit to a production, she will find or create a part for them. Karen is about all kids and makes all kids feel welcome, regardless of their personality or background.
Over the years, Karen has taught and directed countless students in our city. Some have gone on to work in bigger cities and Broadway. For most, she has been a role model that provided a safe place, where children can be themselves, without judgment. Further, Karen has taught all her students that it is okay to take risks. That it is okay to try new things, and we can all have a positive role in our world. Karen, thank you for being a champion for children!
